With our first year coming to an end, it’s time to remind all members that you need to renew membership to ensure access to our events next year.
Our first year has exceeded all expectations. Following our launch party this time last year, we’ve heard NYTimes magazine creative director Janet Froelich, typographer Jonathan Hoefler and Vogue creative director Robin Derrick each talk about their work. Anne Braybon presented a history of sixties title Man About Town. And most recently we held our first panel discussion, a joint event held with the BSME looking at magazines and the web.
Plus, following a successful trial, we’re looking to expand the student mentoring scheme. If you’d like to be involved in this, email me.
So what’s happening next year? The first definite thing for your diary is a talk by Scott Dadich, the creative director of Wired magazine. Based in San Francisco, Wired has established itself as a powerhouse of creative editorial design. This is the first time Scott has visited the UK to talk, and it takes place on April 23rd, full details to follow early in 2009.
Other plans include an evening about illustration and a group event featuring some of the younger UK editorial design stars. If there is any other subject or area you’d like covered please let me know
Before all that, though, we are planning a party at the end of January on February 5th to thank you for your support. This will be free to members, so make sure you renew your membership asap (the form is available under the ‘How to join/renew’ button to the left).
We are planning to combine this with an exhibition to which every member can enter a single piece editorial design work. This can be any piece of work from 2008, and can be your own, from your team, or simply something you’ve seen and liked. The only rule is that it must be a magazine, newspaper or editorial website, consist of one page/spread, and have been published in 2008. This isn’t intended as an awards event, but is simply a chance to show off the best of our profession’s work from the past year. We hope to get a broad selection of work that reflects well on our industry. Again, full details will be circulated early in the new year. Meanwhile please get thinking about which piece of work you will enter.
Finally, I’d like to thank Paul Harpin for doing such a great job getting EDO off the ground as founding chairman.
Have a great Christmas – don’t forget to renew!
