Scott Dadich event

sd_08.jpg

The dapper Mr Dadich, fresh from judging the D&AD Awards, joined us at the Soho Hotel last week to talk us through his work on Wired magazine. And what a talk it was: not only did he show great work, his presentation, humour and insight made it one of the most inspiring talks about magazine design I’ve witnessed.

A big thank you to Scott for sharing his designs and thoughts with us – Jeremy.

Reviews and photos on Things To Look At and Eye Blog.

Last tickets for Thursday’s Scott Dadich talk

We can now open the Scott Dadich talk (this thursday, April 23rd) to non-members.

Remaining tickets cost £15 (members) or £30 non-members.

For further information and to book your ticket please contact the EDO Administration at edo@gillbranston.com.

Next up: Scott Dadich, April 23

Scott Dadich has established American Wired as a powerhouse of creative editorial design. The magazine is a rare combination of raw editorial thought and highly sophisticated information design. He will be showing us examples of his work and discussing his methods.

Wired has received many design awards, and was the most represented publication at our recent DIY exhibition. This event coincides with the launch in the UK and Italy of local editions of Wired.

Tickets are limited so this is a members only event, at £15 each (with some student tickets at £5).

For further information and to book your place/s please contact the EDO Administration at edo@gillbranston.com.

NOTE: Tickets are moving very fast for this event, please book soon to avoid disappointment.

EDO DIY

EDO DIY

Thank you everyone who came along to the party last night, and particularly to those of you who submitted work to the DIY Exhibition. We ended up with a strong set of work. No winners or losers but the two most prominently represented designers were our own Matt Willey and from America Scott Dadich.

Which leads nicely into a reminder that there will be news soon of our next event: Scott Dadich talks on April 23rd. Details here next week.

CR Blog and Things To Look At have further pictures and reports.

Party reminder

A quick reminder that the EDO members party takes place Thursday evening in London. TONIGHT! Full details here.

We’re still after more of your DIY Exhibition entries – if you’re coming don’t forget to bring a front cover or spread that can be exhibited for the evening. No fuss, just a tear sheet or photocopy that can be recycled at the end of the evening. We hope to create a unique snapshot of our member’s favourite editorial designs from 2008.

We have some great stuff already but which single piece would you choose to represent the year? Which item would you be disappointed not to see amongst this extremely un-scientific design poll?

If you can’t make it, add a comment here with a suggestion and I’ll see if I can find the piece in question and enter it for you.

Two new EDO committee members

Studio8’s Matt Willey and Clare Watters, Deputy Creative Director at John Brown have both agreed to join the EDO committee.

Members party – February 5th

We’re having a special members party and exhibition at the London College of Fashion on February 5th. Free to members, £15 for non-members (£10 student non-members). Full details here.

Renewal time

With our first year coming to an end, it’s time to remind all members that you need to renew membership to ensure access to our events next year.

Our first year has exceeded all expectations. Following our launch party this time last year, we’ve heard NYTimes magazine creative director Janet Froelich, typographer Jonathan Hoefler and Vogue creative director Robin Derrick each talk about their work. Anne Braybon presented a history of sixties title Man About Town. And most recently we held our first panel discussion, a joint event held with the BSME looking at magazines and the web.
Plus, following a successful trial, we’re looking to expand the student mentoring scheme. If you’d like to be involved in this, email me.

So what’s happening next year? The first definite thing for your diary is a talk by Scott Dadich, the creative director of Wired magazine. Based in San Francisco, Wired has established itself as a powerhouse of creative editorial design. This is the first time Scott has visited the UK to talk, and it takes place on April 23rd, full details to follow early in 2009.

Other plans include an evening about illustration and a group event featuring some of the younger UK editorial design stars. If there is any other subject or area you’d like covered please let me know

Before all that, though, we are planning a party at the end of January on February 5th to thank you for your support. This will be free to members, so make sure you renew your membership asap (the form is available under the ‘How to join/renew’ button to the left).

We are planning to combine this with an exhibition to which every member can enter a single piece editorial design work. This can be any piece of work from 2008, and can be your own, from your team, or simply something you’ve seen and liked. The only rule is that it must be a magazine, newspaper or editorial website, consist of one page/spread, and have been published in 2008. This isn’t intended as an awards event, but is simply a chance to show off the best of our profession’s work from the past year. We hope to get a broad selection of work that reflects well on our industry. Again, full details will be circulated early in the new year. Meanwhile please get thinking about which piece of work you will enter.

Finally, I’d like to thank Paul Harpin for doing such a great job getting EDO off the ground as founding chairman.

Have a great Christmas – don’t forget to renew!
