Greetings from EDO, and hello from your new chair, Mark Porter. I will be trying to provide you with editorial design entertainments for the next year, and I’m thrilled to announce our next event — an evening with one of Europe’s hottest young art directors — the brilliant Francesco Franchi of the amazing IL magazine, from Milan.

Francesco and IL have been making waves all over the world in the last few years, and we’re lucky to catch him fresh from his triumphs at the SPD awards in New York, where IL picked up two Silver medals and the Gold for members’ choice.

If you know Francesco’s work, you won’t want to miss it. And if you don’t — read what Magculture has to say here http://magculture.com/blog/?p=2182 and here http://magculture.com/blog/?p=12145 and you won’t want to miss it either!

Francesco will be speaking in the uber-cool surroundings of Mother in Shoreditch on Monday, June 25th. See you there.

We are pleased to announce that Mark Porter will be our next speaker on 29 March at Mother, Redcuhurch St, Shoreditch.

Best known for his award-winning redesign of the Guardian newspaper, this event will be a rare opportunity to peer into his diverse archive and hear him talk about the projects he has art directed over his 25 years in editorial design. From cow-gum and Colors Magazine to iPads and Público, this promises to be another unmissable and popular event.

And if that wasn’t enough, I’m delighted to reveal that he will also be your next EDO Chair.

So all that remains is for me to thank you once again for your support and enthusiasm over the last year.

Look forward to seeing you all one last time as Chair.

Many thanks

Hello EDO friends

The craft of data visualisation is often overlooked so we are very pleased to announce our next event is on information graphics on 30 June.

Infographics #1 presents three diverse data specialists:

David McCandless describes himself as a data journalist and information designer. His work has appeared in Wired, The Guardian, and The Independent. He is author of the extremely successful book, Information is Beautiful and has recently spoken at the awe inspiring talks, TED, (Technology Entertainment and Design). McCandless’ book will be on sale at the event for an EDO price of £15 instead of £20.

Nathalie Lees is in-house illustrator for The Times. She also works with numerous freelance clients including the BBC, The New York Times and The Observer. She recently completed the second Professor Brian Cox book ‘Wonders of theUniverse’, designed by Studio 8.

Peter Grundy has spent over 30 years making information visually interesting. His simple yet beautiful approach has become his signature. He calls it “Iconography; pictures that provide information and explain complex things”. Clients include Shell Oil, Architects Journal, Royal Mail, The Guardian and Wired.

It promises to be another stimulating event so buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Better still, become a member and not only receive a significant discount on your ticket price but you’ll also benefit from a 40% discount on ‘The Art Directors’ Handbook of Professional Magazine Design’ published by Thames and Hudson.

And lastly, the EDO is now on twitter, so for latest news on events, speakers and offers, follow us on @edo_tweets.

We have a very exciting year ahead and I’m pleased to announce that our first event this year is about independent magazines. Born out of shared passion or frustration, usually to a small and dedicated team, these niche titles have the potential to inspire the mainstream. We will have presentations from three contrasting titles and the evening should prove an enlightening peek into their world.

Food lovers will salivate with the multi-talented Rob Lowe, (aka Supermundane) and editor Tim Hayward as they talk through their culinary quarterly, Fire & Knives.

Andrew Diprose, (art director of Wired UK), will share his not-so-secret love of bikes. The Ride is a cycling title which he and his brother design and edit, with the profits going to charity.

And it was only last year that we were all mourning the loss of the design journal Grafik. But less than eight months later, it’s back! The Grafik team, Caroline Roberts, Angharad Lewis and (art director) Michael Bojkowski will talk you through their resurrection, and their
new look.

So, remember to renew your membership! When you do, you will not only get priority when booking events but also a significant discount on ticket prices. And most importantly, you’ll be able to sleep soundly knowing that you’re enabling us to continue organising inspiring
events now and in the future.
